Across the world, 10th September is marked as World Suicide Prevention Day. The yellow ribbon is used to signify suicide prevention. Suicide is not a new phenomenon in Ghana. The news shows that it is on the increase. But it can be prevented.
Here’s what you need to know about it.
What is suicide?
Simply, it’s taking one’s own life. Suicidal behavior is when one talks about or takes actions related to ending one’s own life. If you or someone you know is exhibiting either, you should seek immediate assistance from a healthcare provider.
What are the warning signs?
Warning signs of suicide include:
- Hopelessness
- Reckless behaviour
- Rage
- Feeling trapped
- Withdrawing from family, friends & society
- Anxiety
- Agitation
- Dramatic mood changes
What can you do?
Often, people are reluctant to intervene because they don’t know what to say or are worried about making the situation worse. But there’s a lot you can do.
Look out for those who are not coping well and are in great distress. There’s no specific formula to helping people with suicidal behaviour. Empathy, compassion, genuine concern, knowledge of resources and a desire to help are key to preventing a tragedy.
People with suicidal tendencies are not looking for advice or to be preached at. They are looking for support and a listening ear.
